Clerics are usually chosen champions of a given deity. May it be a blessing since birth, divine intervention, a holy event, or just intense devotion, clerics were chosen by a given deity or one of their subordinates/"angels". They will have certain expectations, although they are not omniscient or omnipresent, so take that as you will.
